Home Guests

Families

For more than 14 years, we have been able to host  more than 110 homeless families, including 130 children who might otherwise have been lost to the streets and alleys of Washington, DC.

Our families come to us by referral from the DC government. Many have been on the street or in shelters intended for individual adults.

After staying with us and completing their plan to address the issues which have brought them to our cottage, they walk out our doors and:

  • Move into affordable permanent housing found with the assistance of our program staff
  • Use the certifications and skills acquired through our programs to hold jobs
  • Enter their children into school and safe and nurturing child care programs so they can earn  a living.
  • Apply the parenting and other skills they have learned while with us to sustain a promising future.

  • Long-Term Unemployment Benefits Saved, But Scaled Back
The compromise bill to extend long-term unemployment insurance benefits through the rest of 2012 will reduce the maximum number of weeks available, though by less than Republicans reportedly wanted. It is not perfect, but it is much better than the original House bill, which included some very problematic UI provisions...
  • My Day at Mayor Gray’s One City Summit
D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray's One City Summit was structured to build support for his core strategies to promote long-term job creation and local employment. That and to make District residents feel he is listening to us. We will have to wait for his proposed budget to see if the concerns...
