We invest a tremendous amount of time and effort into our families beyond simply defraying shelter costs, including:
- Providing a managed daily shelter
- Helping families to establish healthy living patterns and interactions,
- Providing meals and staying overnight on weekend nights
- Providing a powerful link to the larger community and
- Offering a window onto life outside of the cycle of poverty
These efforts can lead to gratifying results such as these:
- An 18 -year old mother with a two-year old daughter worked with staff to pursue a GED and volunteered on D.C.’s Mayor’s Youth Council, representing the needs of other homeless mothers.
- A 24-year old mother with mental health disorder and developmental disabilities learned from the examples of staff and the other mothers in the shelter how to care for her newborn baby.
- A mother who is a sexual abuse survivor with low self-esteem completed a job training program and for the first time began to polish her appearance.
While others simply shelter, we seek to nurture. With your help, we can continue our work, and even expand to serve more families in the area.
